Deep Dropping In Panama City Beach, FL
Take Advantage Of Calm Days To Make A Drop!
It has been an extremely hot, and for the most part, really rough summer. Wave heights have kept us from reaching our deep drop and swordfish grounds for most of the summer.
"As Soon As... The Gears Hit The Bottom They Loaded With Heavy Fish"
However, we did get a break last week and convinced one of our charter clients to go deep dropping for groupers. We headed out at 7am and by 9am we were rounding up on our first spot. We baited up the 5 hook gears with whole squid and sent them down over 700'.
"Due to its fighting all the way up, we probably had something we weren't after"
As soon as the two gears hit the bottom they loaded up with heavy fish. We couldn't believe that we hooked two giant fish right off the bat. As the fish came up we realized, due to its fighting all the way up we probably had something we weren't after and we were right. We pulled up two 50+lb amberjacks and decided to move on.
The next few stops were very productive. We caught several really nice yellow edge grouper and a snowy grouper. Believe it or not, we actually caught a nice flounder on one of those same spots. We ended up with a bonus blackfin tuna, as well.
On the way home we stopped on a ledge and topped the box off with a few scamp. The weather was great and the fish were bitting!!! Check out some more photos from the trip on Instagram @team_swordacrazy!
